INITIATIVE IMPLEMENTATION

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) initiatives in India have made Significant progress in recent Years. In 2021-2022, Indian Companies spent over 24,000 Crores on CSR activities, with education, health care, and – rural development being the most benefited Sectors. For example, 7,97,66 crores were-invested in health and sanitation initiatives, and about 40% of the total CSR expenditure was directed towards education.
The Companies Act-2013 mandates CSR under Section 135, making it compulsory for eligible Companies to adhere to CSR.Provisions in India. Companies are required to allocate a minimum of 2% of their net profit over the preceding
three years towards CSR activities.

MONITORING & EVALUTION

Monitoring and Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR)activities can help companies understand how effective their initiatives are and identify areas of improvement. Here are some ways to monitor and evaluate CSR activities.

CSR & CSO partnership

Business firms operate in society not only for market gains but also for generating positive social externalities. Civil society organisations (CSO) have helped society to develop across various spheres of influence. The concept of corporate social responsibility (CSR) ushered in an era wherein both business economic objectives as well as socio-environmental responsibilities of firms were prioritized simultaneously. The path of firms and CSOs intersected through CSR. In this work, the authors develop a typology on firm–CSO collaboration regarding CSR initiatives.

  • Corporate Social Responsibility is a company’s commitment to its stakeholders to conduct business in an economically, socially and environmentally sustainable manner that is transparent and ethical. Stakeholders include employees, investors, shareholders, customers, business partners, clients, civil society groups, Government and nongovernment organizations, local communities, environment and society at large. Corporate social responsibility means giving back to society what it gets from society. For Company in the present context, CSR means not only investment of funds for social activity but also integration of business processes with social processes. CSR is a process with the aim to embrace responsibility for the company’s actions and encourage a positive impact through its activities on the environment, consumers, employees, communities, stakeholders and all other members of the public sphere who may also be considered as stakeholders. According to World Business Council for Sustainable Development “Corporate Social Responsibility is the continuing commitment by business to behave ethically and contribute to economic development while improving the quality of life of the workforce and their families as well as of the local community and society at large”.
  • Corporate social responsibility (CSR) or billionaire philanthropy is like a Rorschach test – the same act can look very different depending on how we understand its intentions and its consequences. In this book the author examines the politics of CSR in India to assess its ability to advance inclusive and sustainable development. The focus is on how CSR is remaking the practices and agendas of civic organizations that are being encouraged to collaborate with business to advance equality and prosperity.
  • Civil society organizations (CSOs) and corporations have a history of hostility to each other. According to CSO workers, businesses selfishly exploit workers, despoil natural resources, and distort democracy to serve their own profit-making ends. According to business executives, CSOs are hopelessly naïve, inefficient, and interfere in the market in ways that reduce economic growth. And yet, in the past decade more and more CSOs and businesses are collaborating in new ways. Individuals from both sectors are setting up social impact enterprises, and social investing funds are increasing. The more traditional forms of corporate-CSO collaboration have expanded as more funds are flowing from business to the social sector. The divide between the corporate sector and civil society seems to be narrowing.

IMPACT ASSESSMENT

A Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) impact assessment is a study that evaluates the social impact of a company’s CSR projects. The purpose of the assessment is to help companies make informed decisions about how to allocate their CSR funds and to measure the impact of their spending. It can also help companies improve transparency, identify areas for improvement, and mitigate risks.

A CSR impact assessment can include:

The assessment should be conducted by an independent agency and completed within one year of the project’s end. The resulting report is then attached to the company’s annual CSR report. In India, impact assessments are only mandatory for companies with CSR obligations of INR 10 crore or more. Companies can set aside up to 5% of their CSR spending, or INR 50 lakh, whichever is less, for the assessment.
